Funerary Stele

The basalt stele is approximately 1 m high and 0.68 m wide. The man sitting on a chair holds an ear of wheat(?) in his left hand and a staff in his right. Unlike similar steles, there is no table in front of him. It is plausible that this was part of a banquet scene on a larger stele. The unprovenanced stele was purchased by the Staatliche Antikensammlungen in Munich in 1988. It is very likely to have originated from the Maraş region. It can be dated to approximately the second half of the 9th century BCE.
