Inscribed Funerary Stele

The basalt stele with a missing bottom section shows a dining scene with a seated female holding a drinking cup in her raised right hand. Unprovenanced stele likely to have originated from the region of Maraş. The hieroglyphic Luwian inscription (MARAŞ 18) at the top identifies the woman as Haniwasti and the person who made/commissioned the stele as Nanaza. Different from most other steles of this type, the upper frame of the stele is decorated with flowers. Stylistically and paleographically, it can be dated to around 800-750 BCE. The stele first came into public view in 2005 in an auction house in Munich, but its current whereabouts are unknown.
