HOME - ZİNCİRLİ TÜRKÇE Colum base with a pair of sphinxes One of two double-sphinx column bases, both of which were found in situ, originally supported the two columns of the entrance of the Hilani III building. Carved from a single basalt block, it measures about 1 meter in height, 1.55 meters in length, and 1.25 meters in width. Shortly after the excavation, it was broken in half and hollowed inside for ease of transportation. The two double sphinx bases are very similar in style to another one found in nearby Sakçagözü. This base is in the Istanbul Archaeology Museum, while the other one is in the Vorderasiatisches Museum in Berlin. |
