Door Jamb

The Hieroglyphic Luwian inscription (KARKAMIŠ A23) on a basalt door jamb is about 100 cm in height and dated to the time of Katuwa. The text tells about how the king re-established the goddess Kubaba as the patron deity of the city of Karkamış. This and several other smaller fragments are believed to be part of the jambs of the inner doorway of the Gatehouse at the top of the Great Staircase. The door jamb was found and transported to London in 1878-79 by Henderson. Some of the smaller pieces are in museums in Istanbul and Ankara.
